Head Coach/Program Director
Kalen Lee Scholz

Kalen started paddling in the Summer of 1999 during a week of LCKC Day Camp at age 12. She was hooked on the sport right away and spent the next six years becoming more deeply committed to training and racing. She was a member of four Junior National Teams and one Senior National team between 2002 and 2005. She raced at the Junior World Championships in Komatsu, Japan in 2003 and again in Szeged, Hungary in 2005. She also raced at the Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney Australia in 2005 and brought home a gold medal in 1000m K1 and a silver in 500m K1.

In the Fall of 2005 she started school at the University of Georgia. In 2009 she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and a minor in Spanish. After graduation, she took the position of Developmental Coach at the LCKC and has been passing on her passion for kayaking and whipping kids into shape ever since.

High Performance and Dragon Boat Coach
Jim O’Dell

Competitively relaxed best describes Jim. A Masters competitive member of LCKC since 2002, he followed in his daughters wake into the sport.  O’Dell tends to study everything he becomes involved in, and quickly began to read about, observe, and question his and other coaches about the nuances of flatwater sprint kayak, and dragonboating. His passion for fun and excellence permeates his professional life.

Jim is a 6-time ICF world championships medalist and World Champion in dragonboating and is a regional coach with United States National Dragon Boat Team, Dragonboat USA.  He has medaled in national and international competition in sprint kayaking and canoeing, garnering several national titles through his years in competition as part of the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club. O’Dell also holds two Georgia state 10k titles in Grandmasters through the Road Runners Club of America and places in distances from 800 meter to half-marathons, and top 10% finishes in marathons.

His coaching experience ranges from our middle school program for a number of years, served as interim head coach for several months or 2006, coached the Masters division for a year and has filled in throughout the years when high performance coaches have been away. Jim is the official head coach of the Hong Kong Atlanta Dragon Boat festival and trains each of the youth at LCKC to steer these craft for the festival, and the recommends them to dragon boat production companies.

Developmental Coach
Cannie Ash

Cannie started paddling at LCKC in 2004 and began coaching at LCKC in 2010. In addition to racing at many international competitions, she has also gained a tremendous amount of experience over the years from working closely with BRL, Masters, and Sprint athletes.

As Developmental coach, Cannie is taking on more of a leadership role with the Sprint 1 and Sprint 2 athletes. Cannie will also be assisting with the organization of the Beginner Racing League and with recruiting for the Sprint Team.
